Math is a language that we’re taught to hate.

When you’re young, it’s easier to absorb a language. A 5 year old learning Spanish from Dora will probably be more successful than a high school student in a Spanish class.

But math is something that people lose patience with. They don’t know how to teach it to their children, so the kids never learn it.

Then you have movies and shows where the main character is just barely making it in their math classes. And that’s okay, that’s acceptable, that’s COOL, because math is hard. It’s way too difficult so why even bother trying?

Then once you actually get to a math class, the things you learned as a child (math sucks) are reinforced by your shitty math teacher. Because smart people become math teachers. But being smart does not mean you’re a good teacher. Actually, it can mean that you’re a really shitty teacher. You’re so smart that you can’t bring yourself down to a level where high school students will understand what the hell you’re talking about.

So then the teacher loses patience with the student and they’re stuck not understanding math and feeling stupid for not getting it right away. Then they give up responsibility for not knowing it, blaming it on the subject itself.

But if we were taught from a young age that, hey math isn’t actually that hard. If we had math teachers that were patient enough to actually sit down with us and make sure we got it, maybe more people would actually understand, and possibly even like math.

Today was my last day at ACHS

It was a little slow in the morning, but I can always count on Morgan and Jennifer to ask me for help in 6th period.

I’ve found myself getting a little apathetic about going around to help the students. But that’s mostly because the only work these kids even have is extra credit. If you’re in a supplemental algebra 1 class in high school, you’re not doing extra credit. I just keep telling myself that it’ll be better when I’m the one deciding on the curriculum.

I said goodbye to Mac and Carrie (the secretary). Coach said good luck to me, and Carrie seemed like she was going to miss me.

I got over half of my hours here at ACHS. I should be able to easily finish off whatever’s left at whatever other high school I find in Sacramento.

26/45 hours

His algebra 2 classes

Don’t need to take the final if they don’t want to. If they like their grade, they can just take it.

Otherwise they can risk it to improve their grade.
